Oil Pulling with Essential Oils – Why you should make it a part of your daily routine!

Shortly after my son was born I joined a Natural mom’s page on Facebook. I was looking for breast feeding advice, but these “crunchy” moms as they called themselves, introduced me to a new style of parenting. From organic food to cloth diapers, and even my first introduction into Essential Oils. Some of the information I incorporated into my own life, while some of it was not right for my family. Oil pulling was one of the things I initially dismissed, and honestly thought was a little crazy. I could not see how swishing Coconut or Olive oil in your mouth for ten to twenty minutes could improve my health or help with the tooth pain I suffered from. The more I got involved in the crunchy community, the more people I saw talking about oil pulling. Articles would fill my news feed about the benefits and personal testimonies. At this time coconut oil had become a staple in my life for cooking, homemade lotions and diaper cream so I thought I had nothing to lose. Turns out what I had dismissed as crazy was actually brilliant.

Oil pulling is actually an oral care practice that dates back 3,000 years. The practice is very simple, you swish about a tablespoon of coconut, sunflower, or olive oil around your mouth for approximately twenty minutes, and then spit it out. Unlike many home remedies there is sound science behind oil pulling.  The fats in these particular oils pick up the bacteria and microorganisms in your mouth by the fatty membrane that surrounds them. They are trapped in the oil and removed from your mouth when you spit out the oil. Coconut oil also has the added benefit of being a known anti-microbial, which is why it is the most recommended oil for oil pulling. For these reasons studies have shown that oil pulling can help fight gingivitis, bad breath and plaque. It has even been show to help speed up the healing time of cold sores.

I had been doing oil pulling for about six months when I became introduced to Young Living Essential Oils. I had already seen great benefit from oil pulling. Left over gingivitis for my pregnancy was gone, and I noticed that the cold sores I occasionally suffered from lasted for shorter periods of time. However my tooth pain was still present. The more research I did on Essential Oils the more I realized I could improve on my oil pulling. Along with my coconut oil in the morning I added a drop of Thieves Essential Oil. Thieves is an anti-microbial, anti-viral and an antiseptic. Not only did adding Thieves help relieve my tooth pain I have not had a cold sore since adding to it my daily oil pulling routine.

To get started with oil pulling the first thing you need to do is find an oil that works for you. I use coconut oil not only for the anti-microbial properties, but because I enjoy the taste. If you don’t find coconut oil appealing you can use olive, sesame or almond oil instead. I would also recommend starting with an amount smaller than a Tablespoon. I cannot comfortably swish an entire Tablespoon in my mouth, so I use less. You can also make oil pulling chews, I have shared the recipe below.  Start with small time frames such as five minutes and work your way up to around twenty minutes. I start my day with a shower, and simply do my oil pulling while I am in the shower and spit it out when I am finished. Along with Thieves, clove, cinnamon and peppermint are great oils to add to you oil pulling routine.

  • 20-30 drops of essential oil (peppermint, cinnamon, clove, etc- check with a doc or midwife if you are pregnant)

  1. Melt the coconut oil until just barely liquid.
  2. Remove from heat and add essential oils.
  3. Pour into silicon candy molds and put in the fridge or freezer to harden.
  4. When done, remove from molds and store in a jar.
  5. Use one per day as needed for oil pulling.

There are a long list of benefits to oil pulling, and adding an Essential Oil improves an already great oral care remedy. For people who are trying to eliminate Fluoride from their lives, oil pulling is a great alternative to traditional toothpaste. Using coconut oil, Essential Oils and a few other ingredients you can also make your own toothpaste leaving over the counter products behind. Making a few small changes in your day can have great positive changes on your health.

Essential Oils and PTSD

This is not my story. It is the story of a close friend of mine. He gave me the information and I helped him put it into words.  For all of those suffering with PTSD, ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) you are not alone and do not have to go though it alone. Links are shared below for hotlines and help. Know that there are people out there who understand and are there to help.

From 2003 to 2007 Kevin spent three years of his life fighting in Iraq. In 2008 he was medically retired due to PTSD, MTBI and Tinnitus. Upon returning home he began treatment for his pain and anxiety. “I’ve been on pills, programs, you name it. I gave it all up and was tired of it, like most combat vets do.” It seemed like there was no  end to the Anxiety and PTSD symptoms. He had found himself in a hole and was content to stay there. Thankfully those who loved him were not content to leave him there. While traveling out of town for a friend’s wedding, he was encouraged to try Essential Oils. Despite his skepticism of these “voodoo oils”, he gave them a try. That night and every night he was there he slept great. He ordered his starter kit shortly after that and changed his life. With Essential Oils he was able to pull himself from that hole and find a better way to live life.

Before using Essential Oils Kevin managed his pain with a daily dose of” ranger candy” 800 mg of Ibuprofen. Like most vets his sleeping habits reflected his years in the service. “I’ve suffered many nights of sleeping in the recliner in the center of the house with my gun in my hand, and waking up in a panic thinking someone had made it past my alarm system.”  Years of abusing your body in that fashion takes its toll. The aches and pains worsened, and he began suffering from stomach problems due to the constant abuse of Ibuprofen. Antacids had to be added to his daily dose of pills, and the ranger candy no longer managed the pain like it once did.

Today Kevin’s daily routine looks much different than it did a year ago. Instead of a “Ranger Breakfast” of coffee and pills; “I wake up, put deep relief on my back, brush my teeth and put my eyes in (he wears contacts), and by the time I’m done, my pain is gone.”  At night he is able to use Peace and Calming and Valor to ease his anxiety and help him sleep. While Peppermint has replaced the antacid, and he no longer reaches for over the counter medications for a headache. When he finds himself with high levels of anxiety he is able to reach for Essential Oils and find relaxationNot all the aches are gone, and PTSD is still something he faces on a daily bases. Yet now he is managing it better than ever before.

valor Peace-Calming

“Essential Oils have given me the chance to not only manage my PTSD but the daily pain that comes from years in a war zone. I have been able to share what I have learned with family and friends and seen positive change in their lives.  The day I left the Army, I swore I would do whatever I can to make my family happy, and taking care of myself is part of making them happy. Take the first step to a healthier you and find out how Essential Oils can make a difference in your life.”

Taking Charge of Your Health – How to Safely Use Essential Oils

In today’s world anyone with an internet connection and a blog can become an expert. This can lead to a lot of misinformation, and Essential Oils are no exception to the rule. When I started using Essential Oils I did hours of research. I looked into individual oils, safety, history, and anything I could get my hands on. I am not an expert. Just a blogger with an internet connection. I have no special degrees and the only title I hold is Mom. This is a compilation of my research concerning the safety of Essential Oils. I personally use Young Living’s Essential oils in my day to day life. There are some safety concerns to consider when using Essential Oils, but I strongly believe that when used properly, they are a safe alternative to conventional over the counter products.

Essential Oils are a naturally occurring oil that is derived from a plant through a distilling process. This process results in a high concentrated oil that holds the properties of the plant it was derived from. They have been used as far back as the time of the ancient Egyptians as a form of medicine. Today they can provide a natural alternative to medication, cleaning supplies and as aromatherapy. It is important to remember that these oils are highly concentrated but as long as you follow safety guidelines they are completely safe.

be-healthy-all-year-long-with-essential-oils-3-728 (1)

While Essential Oils have been used as medicine for centuries, the concept is fairly new to modern day America. There are limited studies and resources on not only the health benefits of Essential Oils, but also the potential risks. Other than the generally safe to consume approval from the FDA, all other organizations have abstained from commenting.  Poison Control has some documented cases of Essential Oil overdose/ misuse. The most common oil reported was Tea Tree oil. I found one reported death of an adult who consumed 5 Ml of Eucalyptus Oil and a 23 month old child  who was in a coma for 48 hours after consuming  1/2 a cup of Tea Tree oil. Both of these cases occurred in the 90’s. Like a medication, Essential Oils should always be kept out of the reach of children. If an over dose should occur you should contact poison control immediately

The biggest conflict I have found on Essential Oil safety is ingesting them. You can find a list of Essential Oils that are considered safe to ingest on the FDA website. There are a few things however to consider when ingesting oils. First and foremost  is serving size. Anything in excesses can have drastic health consequences, and the same is abundantly true for Essential Oils. They are highly concentrated, so just one to two drops is the recommended serving. You also have to consider quality. The FDA takes no part in regulating Essential Oils, so you have to be careful on what you buy. In order for an oil to be labeled pure it only needs to contain 5% of the Essential Oil. The rest can be fillers or additives, and they do not have to be listed on the bottle. With that said oils can be safely consumed in capsules with carrier oils, used in food recipes, and added to a beverage. They also make great toothpastes, mouthwashes and might provide relief from tooth pain. I personally consume Essential Oils and have added them to my oil pulling recipes.

All oils can be applied topically, and most of them can be applied “neat” (without a carrier oil). Some people may experience skin irritation, or find the “heat” from an oil uncomfortable. Topical application can lead to rashes but it is very rare. Every person is different and what may not affect one person can harm another. When starting to use a new oil, you should  first use a carrier, and apply it to a small area to check for a reaction. Should a reaction occur do not flush with water, because that will make the reaction worse. Instead apply a carrier oil and wipe the oils off. Discontinue the use of any oil that leads to an allergic reaction. Serving size is also important here as well. Remember that one or two drops can go a long way. Bottoms of the feet, back of the neck, wrists and temples are some common places to apply oils.

Some oils are phototoxic meaning that they can have an adverse reaction when exposed to UV light. This can result in burns, blisters, swelling and even changes to the color of your skin. Most citrus oils such as Lemon, Orange and Grapefruit are Phototoxic. If you apply these oils topically, the area you applied the oils should not be exposed to direct sunlight for 12-24 hours. Apply sunscreen when you leave the house and if you do have a reaction, treat like any other burn and contact a doctor. There is no concern about ingesting these oils and sun exposure.

Essential Oils should not be used in the eyes, or ears.  If you accidentally get Essential Oils in your eyes do not flush with water! Water will only push the oil in deeper and make the reaction worse. Instead grab a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil. Put drops of the carrier oil in and around your eye, blink and wipe the outside of your eye gently until the pain subsides. Contact your medical professional if you have vision problems or the pain does not subside within 20-30 minutes. Most people are able to manage eye incidents without medical intervention and lasting harm is rare.

Children and oil safety is a topic all of its own. Children are not just small adults. What would be a minor dose to an adult can be fatal to a child. Their bodies cannot process things as efficiently, and they compensate differently than adults. While Essential oils can be very beneficial to children, always use caution and your best judgment. I have written another blog that goes into great detail about children and Essential Oil safety. I strongly recommend not letting your children ingest oils, use proper dilution rates and introduce them to your children slowly.

Making them a part of your daily supplement routine may also have lasting effects. Like medication Essential Oils should be used only as needed. Most people can maintain their health simply by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise. However oils can provide great relief from cold/flu symptoms, used in wart removal , and skin care.  For example a drop of Peppermint oil in water may help ease an upset stomach. If you suffer from chronic conditions that need daily management,  Essential Oils might provide relief and possibly help you use less traditional medication. There are many testimonials from people who have been able to manage Fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and high blood pressure with Essential Oils. Research has also shown that Essential Oils may be helpful for people who suffer from anxiety disorders.

While you should always use the appropriate safety precautions while using Essential Oils, the fear surrounding them is unjust. Last year approximately 40,000 people died from accidental drug over dose, while the number of deaths attributed to accidental Essential Oil overdose is roughly 200 over the last thirty years. Modern medicine and medications have a place in our society, but so do Essential Oils. There is a lot of misinformation out there surrounding Essential Oils, but they have been used as a form of medicine in many cultures throughout history. I personally have been able to change my life using Essential Oils, and would hate to see anyone turned away by fear. Modern medicine and science is amazing and saves lives every day. It has also created a system of dependency that has created a culture of people who have forgotten how to be healthy. Along with a healthy, diet and exercise you can find health with Essential Oils.

Green Cleaning With Essential Oils

Before you start reading I want you to do me a favor. Go to the cabinet where you keep your cleaners, pull them out and look for an ingredient list. Can’t find one can you? Magic erasers, Scrubbing Bubbles, your dishwasher detergent they are all lacking an ingredient list. In fact only 7% of cleaning products disclose their contents. If the ingredients do happen to be on the bottle of cleaner you are holding, can you pronounce any of them? Do you know what any of them are? People wash their dishes and clean their home daily with toxic chemicals, and are not even aware of what they are exposing themselves and their families to. I was guilty of it too. Until I realized there was a better way to clean. Better for the environment, for my family and cheaper!  With the use of Essential Oils I was able to throw out nearly all of my old cleaners, and fill my cupboards with homemade products instead. Essential Oils have powerful antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. They have a fresh scent and combined with the right ingredients are power house cleaning products.

Ammonia, Silica, Butoxyethanol and Methylene Chloride are just a few of the common chemicals that can be found in household cleaners. The Department of Health and Human services lists all cleaners on their website along with known health risks. When you look at the health risks associated with a product, many of them say unknown. There are caution warnings for women who are pregnant and the use around pets.  A majority of European countries have outlawed common chemicals found in American cleaners due to their links to cancer. These chemicals can be inhaled, absorbed through your skin, and ingested by residue left over on your dishes.  Almost all cleaners are deadly if ingested in even small amounts, and can cause respiratory issues if the room is not well ventilated while the product is being used.

Aside from the health risk, commercial cleaners also threaten our environment.  The harsh chemicals are washed into our water systems and sprayed into the air. Packaging waste fills our landfills, and  aerosol cans are not properly disposed of. Household cleaners are supposed to be disposed of in the same manner as paint and batteries due to the hazards they pose to the environment,  but are often simply thrown out. Production of these cleaners produces large amounts of  green house gases and are linked to allergen and asthma irritants within a home.  Many come with warnings that say they can be hazardous to domesticated animals,  posing not just a threat to wildlife but to your pets as well.

You can replace all of those harmful cleaners with just a few simple ingredients. Baking soda, borax, Bonners Soap, Epson salt, Vinegar and Essential Oils. With those ingredients you can make laundry detergent, dishwasher tablets, disinfectants, carpet cleaner, and anything else you would need to keep your home clean. The recipes are simple and easy, with most requiring only two ingredients. By mixing 20-25 drops of Thieves or Lemon Essential Oil in a glass spray bottle, you have a disinfectant that kills up to 99% of germs. Mixing lemon Essential Oil with baking soda creates a powerful shower and toilet scrub. While simply diffusing Purification can neutralize odors and remove impurities from the air. It may be hard to believe that these cleaners work as well as store bought, but aside from my personal testimonial you can find many more linked here along with recipes.

You significantly reduce your impact on the environment by making your own cleaners. Using glass containers to store your homemade products enables you to help keep plastic containers out of the environment. All the products you would need to create your homemade cleaners come in packaging that is easily recycled and reused.  You would no longer have to worry about the need to dispose of your products as hazardous waste.  Or the ramifications of the environment by their use.  The FDA considers most Essential Oils generally safe to consume, giving you peace of mind while using them while pregnant, around your children, and pets.

Not only is making your own cleaners better for your health and the environment,  it is cheaper. The average family spends close to $800 a year on household cleaning products.  A box of Cascade Complete dishwasher packs cost around $15 dollars or $0.44 for a single pack. Using a homemade recipe of Baking Soda, Washing Soda, and Lemon Essential Oil. I can make dishwasher detergent for around $0.5 a cube.  The ingredients  I used to make that detergent can also be used for laundry detergent, bathroom scrubs and more. Even if you don’t want to take the time to make your own products, Young Livings cleaning line is safe for you and the environment while still being cost effective.

With a little effort you can have a big impact on your health and the environment. Making your own cleaning products is safer, healthier,  and cheaper. You will find independence and peace of mind when you take the time to make your world a better place. Not only will your home be cleaner but you will be making a positive impact on the planet. Take all of those toxic chemical out of your house and replace them with Essential Oils. Make 2015 the year you change not only your life but the world around you!

My Essential Oil Journey – Managing my Anxiety with Essential Oils

What made you want to become a Young Living distributor?  It’s an important question, especially when you are selling a product. I did not join Young Living with any intention to sell it. I was at a point in my life where change was necessary. I was suffering from anxiety and chronic pain that was affecting my life. I was looking for natural alternatives, and Essential Oils was the answer I had been looking for. I hope that by sharing my journey I can help people lead healthier and happier lives.

Some of my first memories as a kid are of severe and crippling panic attacks. Fear would consume me, and I would feel like I was unable to breathe and out of control. I learned coping techniques, and the attacks never lasted long.  As I got older the severity and frequency of my anxiety attacks varied. Some years I had no attacks at all, while others would see many sleepless nights. I was fortunate up to that point that my attacks only ever occurred at night. So they never affected my day to day life.

Shortly after my daughter was born the attacks became more frequent. So I cut all alcohol from my life, changed my diet and began exercising. For a few years I was able to manage my anxiety just with lifestyle changes, but then it started becoming more severe. Panic attacks would wake me from a dead sleep, I was manifesting physical symptoms, and unable to calm myself. The worst part was the attacks were no longer confined to the night. For the first time they were affecting my day to day life.

One day I was in the grocery store with my children when I had an attack so bad I had to sit down in the isle. I called my grandma who was able to calm me down long enough to get to the car, and get home leaving the cart full of groceries behind. I was in tears that night and realized that I needed to do something. So I made an appointment to see a psychiatrist. I was seriously considering medication. Something I never wanted to do. I know that drugs have their place, but I wanted to be able to manage this without altering my brain chemistry. I never made it to that appointment.

A friend of mine suffers from severe PTSD, and recently I had opened up to him about my anxiety disorder. When I told him that I was considering medication he told me to hold off. A friend of his had recommended Essential Oils and he was going to give them a try. He said that if they worked he would let me know. It didn’t take long before he was calling me and insisting I order some for myself. I was very skeptical and the price was steep but I had nothing to lose.

My starter kit arrived along with the addition of Peace and Calming that I had ordered for my anxiety. I began using  Peace and Calming before bed or in the midst of a panic attack. Yet it was completely ineffective. In fact it seemed to make my anxiety worse, and I was beyond frustrated. Thankfully the starter kit came with eleven other oils and a lot of information. It sparked my interest, and I began doing research on how to really use Essential Oils.

I started talking to other people who used Essential Oils and spoke with someone about my experience with Peace and Calming. She said everyone is different, and she recommended I try Joy and Citrus Fresh instead. That night I crossed Joy over my heart and diffused Citrus Fresh. I slept thought the night! Something I hadn’t done in weeks. Night after night I slept. Soon I was adding Joy to my morning and nightly routine. I even bought a diffuser necklace, so that I could wear Joy when I left the house.

The more research I did, the more I fell in love with Essential Oils. I added them to my homemade lotions, cleaners, and used them on my kiddos when they got sick. I even started using Essential Oils like Valor and Deep Relief for my chronic headaches and teeth grinding. Now they are a daily part of my routine. I have completely made over my medicine cabinet and changed my life. I am still not anxiety free, and I still occasionally have a panic attack, but they are manageable and infrequent.

Essential Oils gave me the opportunity to change my life. It allowed me to manage my anxiety without prescription medication. I have seen my friends and family find physical and mental health. Young Living has given me the opportunity to so something I am passionate about. I have become a part of community that is supportive and based on a natural approach to health. I get to be apart of people’s journeys to health and happiness. Let me help you on your journey to health.

Children’s Safety Concerning Essential Oils

When I began my Essential oil journey the first thing I needed to know was, are they safe for my children? I am not a doctor, and I don’t have any special degrees. I am just a mom who wants what is best for her children, so I began my research. I learned not only are they  safe, but they provide relief from colds, teething, scrapes, sleep issues and helps to build their immune system. I also read several blogs and articles warning of seizures, respiratory issues and the risks of exposing children to Essential Oils. The Essential Oil industry in America  is not well regulated and there is a lot misinformation out there. Knowledge is power and as long as you are well informed there is no need to fear the use of Essential Oils.

The common fear when using Essential Oils on children is seizures and respiratory issues. Some oils like eucalyptus and peppermint are respiratory irritants. While these oils can provide relief from congestion and sinus issues,  I do not recommend applying them near the chest or face. There are great recipes for shower disks, chest rubs and lotions that provide relief in a safe way. Despite my hours of research, I could not find any research linking seizures to the use of Essential Oils. I found several oils recommended to avoid if you have a seizure disorder. Always follow your doctors recommendations.

Let’s talk about how to safely use Essential Oils with your little ones. Essential Oils like medications should be kept out of the reach of children. Never put oil oils in children’s ears or eyes. Dilution is the key to safely using  essential oils with children. To dilute you mix them with a plant based oil known as a carrier oil. Coconut, olive and V6 are the most commonly used carrier oils. The following chart shows dilution rates for a variety of ages. There are three ways to use essential oils ingesting them, topically and diffusing. You need to use special considerations when using each route.

There are several schools of thought on ingesting essential oil. I personally do ingest them. My children on the other hand do not. I firmly believe that the potency of the oils is more than what their bodies can process. When using for oral care such as teething relief and toothpaste use caution and your best judgment. I know several parents that let their older children ingest oils. There is no specific age where it is safe to ingest them,  you as the parent have to decide what you are comfortable with. If you choose to let your children ingest oils, always dilute in a capsule.

Topical is my preferred method of using Essential Oils on my children. I use Eucalyptus to relieve congestion, Lavender to help them sleep and Thieves to boost their immune system.  After the age of one I no longer dilute for use on their feet.  If I am going to use them anywhere else I follow recipes to make sure I have the correct dilution ratios. I also diffuse daily around my children, or in their rooms at night if they are sick. Just remember to keep the room ventilated and follow the instructions that came with the diffuser.

Between their blends and single oils, young living has over 150 oils to choose from. It can be overwhelming, especially when trying to decide what to use on your children. However  Young Living makes this easier by offering  a kids collection that is pre-diluted and ready to use. If this collection is not an option for you don’t be discouraged.  Introduce your children to Essential Oils slowly and start with gentler oils such as Lavender and Peace and Calming.  There is no official do and don’t list for Essential Oils and children. Although  The American Academy of Pediatrics has not released a statement concerning Essential Oils, you can find several opinion articles and blogs from Pediatricians and Aroma Therapists, along with several safe and not safe lists.

Essential Oils are a  great addition to your mommy tool belt. They are gentler then some alternatives,  natural,  and in my opinion, safer than most over the counter medications. Essential Oils have completely changed my medicine cabinet, and replaced most of my cleaning products. I have great love and respect for modern medicine, but we as a society have forgotten how to naturally take care of our bodies. Instead of reaching for the natural approach we reach for a pill. I feel the risks of Essential Oils are over stated.  As long as you are safe and knowledgeable they provide great benefit to children.

It Costs How Much? Why Essential Oils are worth the investment and not as expensive as you think.

It costs how much? Was not only my response but most people’s reaction when they heard about the cost of Young Living Oils. Despite the daunting cost I took the plunge and paid the $150 for the starter kit. I did this for two reasons, one I trust my friend who was confident in the product.  Secondly, I was desperate to find something to get my anxiety under control. It was the best investment I have ever made, and  I soon realized it was not as costly as it first appeared. As a stay at home mom and Army wife I understand managing a budget. Not only has Young Living improved my families health, it has allowed me to save money by replacing every day products with Essential Oils.

In my previous blog I talked about the different Essential Oil companies out there and why I chose Young Living. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Well the same is true for Essential Oils.  Young Living is a high quality product, many are safe to ingest and apply directly to your skin. The purity of the oils allows you to:  replace OTC medications,  make cleaning supplies, lotions, other beauty products, and cook with them as well. Not only do you save money by making your own products, you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing what all the ingredients are.

Don’t be put off by the small size of the bottles. Since Essential Oils are so highly concentrated,  most recipes only call  for 10-15 drops. When applying to your skin or ingesting you don’t want to go over a drop or two. One drop of peppermint oil for example is equal to 28 cups of peppermint tea. Most of the bottles last for months if not longer, making the cost much less than it originally appears.  A 15 ml bottle of Thieves retails for around $44. There are approximately 250 drops in the bottle, coming out to 14 cents  per drop. A bottle of Thieves lasts me around three months coming to about $13 a month at wholesale prices. I choose Thieves for my example because this versatile oil works to boost immune health, is a cleaning agent and can be used in dental care.

How do you put a price on your health? For many Young Living members Essential Oils have become a daily part of their health routine. Allowing them to stop using traditional medications, manage anxiety, boost their immune system, manage pain/chronic illnesses as well as alleviate the symptoms of  colds and flu’s. There is a long list of benefits and you can check out testimonials provided by people with first hand experience. I strongly encourage everyone to do their own research and see what might work for them. I can’t put a price on my families health and being able to manage my anxiety medication free.

There are many opportunities to save money with Young Living. If you are ready to take the plunge contact me and I will help you decide what works best for you and your family.

Navigating Essential Oil Companies and Certifications

When I started using Essential Oils I was thrown into Young Living by a friend with nothing but good intentions. He had started using them for his PTSD, and after great results, thought I could benefit from them for my own anxiety.  After I got my starter kit I realized there was a lot more to Essential Oils than applying a few drops to help with panic attacks. While the oils did help me with my anxiety I wanted to learn more about their other health benefits. I than discovered other companies, the risks associated with essential oils and the lack of regulation. Each company I researched claimed to have a certification but there was no explanation of what that certification actually meant. So began my research.

Let me start by saying that in the United States there is no government or third party agency that regulates essential oils. Aside from the USDA approval for organic every other stamp of approval is either made up by the company or a set of guidelines that people are expected to follow on the honor system. Therapeutic grade for example is a term widely used, and it is expected that if you claim to be of therapeutic grade you are using a pure oil with no fillers. With that said no one tests that to make sure people are being true to their labeling. The only third party that did quality testing I could find was in France the Association Francaise De Normalisation (AFNOR).

I compared four companies: Young Living, Doterra, Ameo and Now.  Here is what I discovered about each company:

NOW:  Was actually the first company that I ever used. I bought them from a health foods store to use in my lotions and deodorants. The problem I later discovered is that directly on the bottle it says not to be used on the skin or be consumed. They are therapeutic grade but I believe the intent was to diffuse and use for aromatherapy purposes. If this is what you are looking for in an oil it is a fair priced option. Always follow the directions on the bottle and do not consume or apply directly to the skin. The company was founded in 1968 and have a wide variety of products that seem great.

Ameo: This is a company that is new to the market founded in Sept. 2014. They have Certi-5 difference which is said to make their oils the purest on the market and tested by patented technology. Their website says they meet AFNOR standards (unable to find if they are approved by AFNOR) and lists all the testing the oils go through. The certi-5 difference is their trademark and a certification they set up the standards for, and only they can hold. They buy the oils from outside sources and bottle them after they undergo testing.  I could not find the patent to the patented technology.

Doterra:  This company, along with Young Living, dominates the Essential Oil market. The company was founded in May, 2008, and is Certified Pure  Therapeutic Grade.  Like Ameo’s Certi-5, this is a certification they trademarked, set the standards for and only they can have. They do not met AFNOR standards but in an article written by Doterra  I found this: ” For many years, Young Living was the only essential oil company in North America that had been collaborating with government-certified analytical chemists in Europe, to ensure that its essential oils met the highest standards.  For that, we owe these people a debt of gratitude.  They set a very high standard for the industry to follow.” The company strives for quality and high standards. The oils are purchased from a third party, and then bottle for distribution. A list of the tests done on the oils is listed on their website.

Young Living: Was founded in 1993 and is the only company that own the farms from which the oils are produced. There are two farms in the US that you can visit in Idaho and Utah. A list of farm locations is on their website.  The company has a seed to seal guarantee like the other companies it is a certification created by young living and only they can have. They meet ANFOR standards, have their stamp of approval and were the first on the market in the United States to do so. The oils are bottled at the source and a list of tests done on the oils is listed on their website as well.

After hours of research I was happy with my decision to stick with Young Living. There are other companies out there that provide quality products, but the selling point for me was that Young Living owns their own farms, and has an outside source to quality test their products. I encourage everyone to check the links below and do their own research. Be safe if you plan to consume oils or use them on children.
